Presbyterian High, Friday, March 23, 2012 — Dunman Secondary ended Xinmin Secondary’s hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals after beating them 2-0 (25-19, 25-20) in a Round Two, Group Y match at the National B Division Boys’ Volleyball Championship.

From the start, Xinmin had been touted to earn a place in the top four but a sudden drop in form after the March holidays saw them suffer a shock defeat to Catholic High in their Round Two match. They managed to keep their hopes alive after a victory in their second match but still needed to win at least one set against Dunman to have any hopes of progressing to the next round.

Despite Dunman having already sealed top spot in the group, they did not give Xinmin any chance and dominated the match from start to finish.

Dunman showed that they were heads and shoulders over the rest as they dominated the match with 36 points from 31 kills, two blocks and three service aces. Xinmin on the other hand could only manage 24 points from 19 kills, four blocks and one service ace.

Dunman pulled ahead right at the start to establish a 12-5 lead over Xinmin. Despite a timeout by Xinmin at this point, they could not break Dunman’s momentum as the latter took the next point with a well placed drop shot by their setter.

Dunman continued pulling ahead as Xinmin struggled to put up an answer to Dunman’s spikes. Dunman scored several decisive points as they powered their spikes to Xinmin which was unreturned.

Xinmin’s defensive errors continued to plague them and despite managing to take a few points in quick succession, they could not overcome their initial deficit and saw Dunman take the set 25-19.

Dunman continued their winning form in the second set and pulled ahead to lead 8-4. Xinmin were still unable to put up a response and watched haplessly as Dunman pulled ahead to lead 20-13.

Xinmin continued to find ways to score and came to within four points of Dunman to trail 20-24. However, it was too late as Dunman sealed the match after a powerful spike from Mark (Dunman #11).

Dunman will now face Group X runner-up St Hilda’s Secondary in the semi-final on Friday, March 30.
