Presbyterian High, Thursday, March 22, 2012 — Cedar Girls’ came from behind to beat Xinmin Secondary 2-1 (13-25, 25-18, 25-20) in a Round Two, Group X match of the National B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship.

Cedar had a disastrous first set as they saw Xinmin race off establish a massive lead. Timeouts by Cedar at the 4-0 and 10-1 marks could not stop Xinmin from racing ahead to lead 20-8. Despite Cedar managing to take a few points subsequently, they could not stop Xinmin from capturing the set 25-13.

The second set saw a Cedar revival as they started giving Xinmin a tough fight. Xinmin held on to a narrow lead as Cedar fought hard to draw level. Claudia (Cedar #18) scored eight kills in the set to turn things around for the team.

Cedar tied the score 13-13, before turning the tables on Xinmin.

Xinmin found themselves stuck at the 13 and 14-point marks as Cedar raced ahead to eventually lead 24-18. Cedar then took the set after Kai Qi (Cedar #13) scored the last point via a light tap.

Xinmin’s momentum seemed to have been broken as they allowed Cedar to take the lead in the third set. At the changeover, they were trailing 8-13 to Xinmin and found trouble catching up. Xinmin were unable to score many kills in the set and it was Hui Shi (Xinmin #11) who helped keep Xinmin in the game with her five kills for the team.

Xinmin got their closest chance to level at the 17-16 mark when Kim Choo (Xinmin #7) successfully blocked an attempt by Claudia (Cedar #18). However, they sent their serve out of bounds for Cedar to extend the lead once again.

Cedar kept up their momentum and pulled ahead to lead 22-20. Xinmin were unable to make a comeback as a slew of errors in the next three rallies subsequently gave Cedar the win.

With this win, Cedar are now level with Jurong in the table with three points each. Cedar will play Anderson in their next match and a win will put them in good stead in qualifying for the semi-finals. Xinmin on the other hand are at the bottom with one point. However, they still stand a chance at qualifying. Should they beat Jurong 2-0, while Cedar loses 2-0 to Anderson, Xinmin will progress into the semi-finals alongside Anderson.
