B Div Vball: Shuqun see off Fairfield in Group X match

Presbyterian High, Monday, March 19, 2012 — Shuqun Secondary held off Fairfield Methodist to win 2-0 (25-19, 25-18) in a Round Two, Group X match a the National B Division Boys’ Volleyball Championship.

It was a slow start to the match as Shuqun found themselves in the lead. A spirited Fairfield mounted their attacks early in the set and it was their hit errors which gave Shuqun points.

Errors from both sides saw the match tied at the nine and 10-point marks, but Shuqun managed to break free to lead 14-11. Shuqun held on to their lead and left Fairfield to play catchup, as they soon commanded a 23-17 lead over Fairfield.

A strong spike by Shuqun took the team to set point but the Fairfield #17 held off Shuqun with a powerful reply of his own. A bad receive by Shuqun in the next rally saw Fairfield take another point. However, Shuqun subsequently sealed the set after the Shuqun #1 pressed the ball down from the outside.

Shuqun continued their momentum in the second set and raced to a 5-0 lead. Fairfield tried hard to respond but were unable to overcome the deficit as they watched Shuqun run off to lead 12-5.

Shuqun stepped up their attacks in the set, scoring a total of 18 kills in the set. Fairfield managed to break through once in a while but were still no match as Shuqun continued extending their lead. Fairfield kept up their spirits and fought hard to close in the gap. But despite errors creeping into Shuqun’s play late into the set, the advantage they had pulled for themselves was enough to serve as a buffer as they took set point after a good spike by Haziq (Shuqun #10).

The Shuqun #1 unfortunately sent his serve into the net, but Fairfield returned the favour with a serve into the net as well, gifting Shuqun the final point.
