Presbyterian High, Wednesday, March 7, 2012 — Dunman Secondary beat Fairfield Methodist 2-0 (25-10, 25-12) in a Round One, Group A match to qualify for the second round of the B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship.
Fairfield had come into the match needing a win in order to stand a chance at qualification. They had lost both their earlier matches to Sembawang Secondary and Jurong Secondary. A win over Dunman would see a three-way tie between them, Dunman and Sembawang with all three schools having one win and two losses. However, it was not to be as Dunman prevailed to finish in second place behind Jurong Secondary. Fairfield Methodist, the 2011 runner-up are consequently eliminated from the competition after failing to win any of their matches at the Nationals.
Dunman started the match strong and raced ahead to establish a 7-3 lead. Despite Fairfield’s efforts to counter, they could not stop the East Zone champions from pulling ahead to lead 16-8.
Dunman dominated with their well placed shots, raking in point after point. They were soon leading 23-10 after Celine (Dunman #9) scored with a service ace. Dunman were then at set point after a ball handling error by Fairfield.
Dunman then sealed the last point after a strong spike which saw Fairfield unable to organise a return.
Dunman continued their rampage in the second set as they raced ahead to lead 12-6.
Fairfield fought hard to keep the score close but were unable to prevent Dunman from pulling ahead.
Soon, Dunwan were at match point after a strong serve by Heng Hwee (Dunman #10). However, Fairfield refused to go down without a fight and held Dunman at bay for two consecutive points.
Dunman did not let the minor setback affect them as they subsequently sealed the match 25-12 following a spike from the opposite corner which Fairfield deflected out of bounds.
