Choa Chu Kang Sports Hall, Friday, February 17, 2012 — In both sets, they found themselves trailing by a large margin. But on both occasions, Shuqun Secondary overcame the deficit to beat Hua Yi Secondary 2-0 (25-21, 25-23) in the 3rd/4th placing match of the West Zone B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship.

Hua Yi scored a total of 31 points with 23 kills, one block and 7 service aces while Shuqun had 15 kills, 4 blocks and 3 service aces. Hua Yi also had the top scorers on their team with Ruijia (Hua Yi #1) and Rannie (#16) scoring 10 points each. Unfortunately, they were let down by a substantial number of spiking and unforced errors which allowed Shuqun to snatch victory from them.

At the start, Hua Yi stormed ahead to command a decisive 9-0 lead. Bei Ni (Hua Yi #6) had fired off several service aces in quick succession as Shuqun’s defenses struggled with their first ball. It was only after a spike by Kavis (Shuqun #11) that Shuqun momentarily broke Hua Yi’s scoring streak.

Shuqun managed to make a comeback to close the gap to four points, but Hua Yi continuously held the advantage as they headed into the second half of the set.

Shuqun eventually narrowed the score gap to trail 16-17, subsequently tying the score at 19-19 after a service ace from Gabrielle (Shuqun #1).

The score continued to be tied for the next two points before Kavis increased the lead to two points by scoring two consecutive points. Xiao Wen (Shuqun #13) then took set point for the team before Kavis finished off the set with another well-placed spike.

Hua Yi did not let the loss affect them as they continued to give Shuqun a hard fight in the second set. They broke free from a stalemate at the start and took off to establish a 16-12 lead over Shuqun.

However, errors started creeping into their play as they gave away many points to allow Shuqun to make a comeback.

Hua Yi maintained a slender lead over their opponents, and continued to be neck and neck till the 22-22 point where they finally called a time out.

Hua Yi managed to take the next point after Celine (Shuqun #16) sent her serve out of bounds, but a position fault before the next rally could start saw Shuqun back on level ground once again. Hua Yi’s misfortunes continued as a bad return in the next rally saw Shuqun take set point.

Shuqun capitalised on their advantage and sealed the match with a spike from the outside by Kavis (Shuqun #11).
