Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, July 15, 2011 — Anglican High and Raffles Girls’ School posted wins in their Group A matches to qualify for the second round of the National C Division Girls’ Basketball Championship. Anglican High swept aside Yishun Town Secondary 51-29 while RGS beat Jurong Secondary 38-23.

From the start, Anglican High showed their dominance as they put in 15 points while restricting Yishun Town to only seven in the first quarter.

Anglican’s ability to put points on the scoreboard, especially by their #7 and #14 in the second quarter, meant that they were able to command a comfortable lead and head into the second half leading 27-14.

Anglican High were in cruise control in the third quarter as they ran off with an additional 19 points. Yishun Town on the other hand could only manage five points in the quarter.

Despite a spirited effort in the fourth quarter which saw them outscore Anglican High by five points, it was no where enough to overhaul the lead which Anglican High had built up in the first three quarters.

With this win, Anglican High top their group with six points while Yishun Town finish in third spot with four points.

In a later game, RGS held off Jurong to earn a spot in the second round. Having lost both their earlier matches, Jurong were looking for a win in order to maintain any chance at qualifying. RGS also needed a win to avoid crashing out in the group stages.

It was a slow start for both teams as they struggled to find their footing. The RGS #14 helped put her team in the lead with six points out her team’s eight in the first quarter. Jurong on the other hand could only score via the free-throw line and ended the first quarter trailing by four points.

Jurong were still unable to break through the RGS defense in the second quarter and found themselves outscored 10-4. The halftime break saw a minor argument break out between the RGS teacher-in-charge and referee Jimmy Chua as the latter was accused of inconsistent umpiring. However, the dispute did not threaten to boil over and the match was allowed to continued.

A spirited performance by Jurong in the third and fourth quarter saw the team close in on RGS midway. Despite the atmosphere getting more intense, RGS held off Jurong’s challenge and pulled ahead once again.

Anabel (Jurong #7) was fouled out in the fourth quarter as she picked up her fifth violation. Despite this, Jurong continued their fight but eventually had to concede defeat as RGS went on to win 38-23.
