Kallang Tennis Centre, Thursday, April 7, 2011 — Methodist Girls’ school clinched a unique double after they defeated the Nanyang Girls’ High School 4-0 in the C Division Tennis Championship final. MGS had sealed the B Division title earlier in the year.

MGS had lost 2-3 to Nanyang Girls’ NYGH in an earlier group game but this time around, they outplayed Nanyang in every match-up in the final.

Joanne Koh was down 3-6 after the first set but managed turn things around to blitz her Nanyang counterpart with a pair of donuts, 6-0 6-0.

It was a similar situation for Sarah Chia. She went down 1-6 in her first set but was able to blow past her opponent 6-0, 6-0 to win her match in emphatic fashion.

Geraldine Ang of MGS then rounded out the trio of singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win of her own to help MGS secure the title with ease.

The double pairing of Stephenie Theng and Deborah Theng added to the total with a victory in their match as they outplayed the Nanyang pair 6-4, 6-1 for a comfortable victory.

MGS were on course to white wash Nanyang when lightning halted the progress of their second doubles. The MGS pair of Rebecca Loy and Hilary Tan were all tied up with the Nanyang pair of Nicole Teoh and Claudia Yap at one set a piece.

“The girls really outperformed themselves today. We were expecting a really close fight with Nanyang today but the girls really gave their all in their games. They remained mentally strong when they were down and they were able to comeback strongly as well. It’s a pleasant surprise to see them fight hard and win the title today,” said MGS coach, Mr Ang Hock Chai.
