Anglo-Chinese Junior College, Monday, July 26, 2010 — St. Andrew’s Secondary claimed top spot in Group F after a 21-0 win over Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) (ACS(BR)) in the National C Division Rugby Championship.
As both teams already secured a place in the semi-finals, it was more of a fight for pride and who they would face in the semi-finals.
In the first 10 minutes, Saints were given two penalties, but Kelvin Yau (Saints #7) was unable to make both of them count. However, two minutes after the second penalty, Kelvin scored a try and converted it as well to give Saints an early 7-0 advantage.
After six minutes of play involving numerous scrums and line-outs, Syraz (Saints #12) finally broke the deadlock with a try. Kelvin then added two points with the conversion to give Saints a 14-0 lead.
Though both teams tried their best to score towards the end of the half, Saints still held a comfortable 14-0 lead at the interval.
It looked like ACS(BR) would stage in a comeback at the start of the second half after they were handed an advantage when a Saints player was yellow carded. However, they failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage and conceded another try eight minutes into the half. Samuel Koh (Saints #8) did the damage while Kelvin converted again to put Saints firmly in front 21-0.
Though ACS(BR) tried to fight back and threatened Saints’ try line on a couple of occasions, they could not get on the score sheet and Saints wrapped up the match 21-0.
Saints captain Wilson Chan said their team deserved the win as they put in a lot of effort into the match.
On their next game against Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), he remarked: “We are ready to give our 100%. We believe we can win the match, and subsequently the championship.”
ACS(BR) and St. Andrew’s move on into the semi-finals on Friday, July 30th, at CCAB.
ACS (BR) will play against Raffles Institution at 3pm in one semi-final while St. Andrew’s will meet rivals ACS(I) at 4.30pm in the other.
