Republic Polytechnic, Friday, July 23, 2010 — The Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) girls beat Republic Polytechnic (RP) 6-4 in the Polytechnic-Institute of Technical Education (POL-ITE) Floorball Championship.

The win is their fourth straight and they now have a perfect 4-0 win-loss record. This is RP’s first loss and they fall to 2-1.

The game started off on a bad note for RP with Siti Melissa Hamid (NYP #18) scoring in the 2nd minute. With a goal under their belt, NYP went on to attempt several more but RP held their ground to end the period down only 0-1.

The pace of the 2nd period was considerably faster than the first with both teams passing the ball quickly around the court.

n the 23rd minute, RP finally penetrated NYP’s defense. Sia Wan Xin (RP #12), with an assist from Marie Denise C Satuito (RP #4), tapped the ball into NYP’s goal to tie the score up at 1-1.

However, the tie was not maintained for long. In the 30th minute, Nursabrina Banuh (NYP #10) scored a goal in a fierce goal-side scramble. The RP keeper was left prostrate on the floor and could do nothing but watch as Nursabrina sent the ball sailing into the goal.

With RP trailing 1-2, a timeout was called. But that did very little to help. When play resumed, NYP scored twice through Marie Clarisse Satuito (NYP #11) just seconds after the end of the timeout and Toh Limin (NYP #14) in the 32nd minute.

The 2nd period ended with NYP leading 4-1.

RP started the 3rd period the more positive, scoring their second to make it 2-4 within a minute of the restart through Wan Xin.

However NYP replied two more times in the 43rd and 48th minutes with Siti Melissa and Marie Clarisse respectively to lead 6-2.

With just seven minutes left, RP would not resign themselves to defeat and threw on fresh players. The pace of the game quickened and game-play got rougher. Lots of fouls were committed and the rest of the game was marred by whistle blows and free-hits.

In the 51st minute, RP pushed past NYP’s defence to slot in a goal through Marie Denise to make it a three-goal deficit at 3-6.

Wan Sin got another for RP with 32.4 seconds left but NYP eventually walked off 6-4 winners.

“We played well, but maybe the referee was just not on our side,” said Wan Sin, scorer of two RP goals.

NYP coach Xie Ruyi said: “I guess they played well. They were more structured and technically stronger this year. In the first period there was not much opportunity to score, but we took it back in the third period.”
