Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, March 31, 2010 - Jurong Secondary staged an upset in the first round of the National B Division girls' Basketball Championship, beating North Zone champions Woodgrove Secondary 42-37.
Leow Jie Yi (Jurong #4), who led her side with 17 points, downed two free throws and scored the crucial basket with time winding down to put the game beyond Woodgrove and seal victory for her team in this exciting Group D clash.
Although they held a 10-7 lead at first quarter, Woodgrove were unable to hold Jurong back as the West Zone side fought back to take a 22-20 lead at the half before extending their lead to as many as 10 points in the third quarter.
However, Woodgrove were not about to go down easily, dragging themselves back into the game, coming to within two points at 35-37 with 2.12 minutes left on the clock. Yet, as hard as they tried, they were not able to put the much needed points on the board and eventually lost the match.
The win was Jurong's first in the tournament after they narrowly lost to Anglican High 42-44 in their opening match. They will hope to qualify for the second round against Mayflower Secondary in their next game.
Anglican High are the only team in Group D to have a 100% record with victories over Jurong and Mayflower (61-16). They raced to a 19-4 lead in the first quarter against Mayflower and never looked like slipping up, limiting their opponents to just four points each quarter.
For Woodgrove, their qualification to the quarter-finals now hangs in the balance, despite thrashing Mayflower 69-16 in their opening match. They will face the undefeated Anglican High in the final match of Group D.
Both matches will be played on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 1600 hours.
