Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, May 4, 2009 - Hwa Chong Institution prevailed over St Andrew’s Junior College 58-20 for its first victory in the A Division girls’ basketball quarter-finals.

Boasting the championship title from last year, Hwa Chong Institution did not take long to discover their scoring touches as they ran riot right from the start of the match-up.

They romped to a 20-1 lead by the end of the first quarter, a reminder to other opponents of their status as defending champions. On top of that, the points came from six different players for Hwa Chong.

St Andrew’s began the second quarter promisingly after Jasmine (SAJC #10), their top scorer with 11 points, scored the first two points. But it was all Hwa Chong from then on as St Andrew’s committed far too many mistakes in the game.

Again, Jasmine (SAJC #10) churned out the first points in the third quarter. In addition, she sparked a 6-0 run for St Andrew’s late in the period to outscore Hwa Chong, 10-7.

In the final quarter, Hwa Chong maintained their dominance in the game with the first points and never looked back. Matters got worse for St Andrew’s as they failed to keep out seven different players from getting their names on the scoreboard. In the end, they had to surrender to the better opponents on the first day of the quarter-finals.

On the other court, it was also a one-sided affair as Raffles Institution overcame Nanyang Junior College with ease, 48-30.
