Jurong East Sports Hall, Thursday, April 30, 2009 - The B Division Basketball Championship witnessed the emergence of new champions in the girls' and the boys' categories. Previous winners Raffles Girls' School could only manage a third position this year while Catholic High were eliminated from contention after the second round of the national championship.
This year, Dunman Secondary and Presbyterian High were crowned the girls' and boys' champions respectively after epic showdowns with Chung Cheng High (Main) and New Town Secondary respectively.
Lor Weng Siang of New Town was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the boys' final. His 28-point performance in the final won him the award.
"I am surprised. I thought the MVP will come from the winning team and the most likely candidate should be Russel (PHS #5)," said Weng Siang.
He added, "I am disappointed that we lost the game. I guess we were just not sharp enough as compared to the previous match-up." However, he was not too upset as he said, "This is the first time we have reached so far in the competition."
The girls' MVP went to Foo Mei Geok (#7) of Dunman. Her contribution of 21 points helped spur her team to a roaring victory late in the final quarter against hot favourites Chung Cheng High (Main).

Good idea Melo. Maybe we can try that for next year. A bit late this year.
i think that a round up of all players in the basketball campaign would be cool. like, best defender, 3pt shooter, best clutch player etc etc, and list the other competitors as well. cos like ppl look at the star players of a team and not its key players/contributors. uncle les, what do u think?
getting a MVP is not just base on the final match… if u not a go player, u also no change to shine… this year WENG SIANG got MVP because he is better n the best… 🙂
for thoes ppl who got MVP last year,,, is also a good player… there is no reason tt u got MVP but ur skill is not good…
oh come on, are you jealous of Dominic and Jabez getting the MVP in the previous years? They are talented players, they deserve it. And of course, it’s through the team’s effort that they can get this award the previous years. I bet the team themselves know. The players in the team doesn’t even complain or what, I don’t see why you’re so sensitive towards them getting the MVP. Lols. And if a player isn’t good, do you think he even have the chance to shine? You’re indirectly trying to saw Jabez “steal” all the credits don’t you?
Since the judges do not attend all the matches, they just look at the score sheet for reference. The team with the least fouls will usually get the award. I think technical fouls and unsportmanship fouls carries a heavier penalty in the judging.
the meaning of fairplay is?
fair play award is awarded to players who performed fair play in their games or were involved in a specific incident of fair play..

what i mean is to be an mvp,u have to inspire your team.you have to be the leader.when the chips are down,you have to stand up and be counted.thats what weng xiang have been doing.every single game.i am not a supporter of newtown or am i biased against cat high.cat high is a good team.but to me all their players did their job well last year.and why in my opinion jabez dont deserve it.is cos he get the chance to shine.jabez and dominic.most of the time they are doing the offensive part.tahts y they stand out.but if everyone realise without ming xuan and gong tat rebounding exceptionally well,they wouldnt even win the nationals last year.and lets not forget wong kam seng.he is a really versatile player.i ahve seen him play in all positions for ch before.sacrificing himself for the team.for me last eyar he should be mvp.it is not that i hate dominic and jabez.to me they are a good player.above average for their age.but they r not good enough to be an mvp.thats all.
I agree that the comments by truemvp are unfair, if you have been watching the local basketball scene you will actually realise that there are many players who are very worthy of the ‘MVP’ at various parts of the competition over the years. Last year’s winner Dominic was integral to Cat high’s dominance in the C and B divs for the past 3 years. In the South Zone and even nationally, there are very few forwards that any coach would take before Jabez as well. WengXiang is indeed exceptional this year, as has Russell as well as Yao Ming and a case can be made for several players from other schools as well.
The MVP is selected based on the finals performance, be it zone or nationals, do not let your own bias cloud the integrity of the game. Love your teams and your players but love the game more.
What do you mean by saying true mvp.. Are you implying that dominic and jabez weren’t “true”(as quoted) mvps?
On the contrary, i happen to think they deserved their award as much as Wengsiang did.
And they all did great, in my opinion.

at last a true mvp emerge….not like last year when dominic was mvp…and jabez was mvp in south zone.
