CCAB, Tuesday, April 14, 2009 – Raffles Girls’ School thrashed Cedar Girls’ Secondary 77-28 in a C Division Basketball Championship game.

RGS started off strongly against Cedar Girls’, going 29 points clear in the first quarter with a score of 33-4, boosting their morale with five consecutive layups in the first quarter.

Cedar were without key player #11 Shannen, and they surely looked like they missed her. Cedar #4 Jia Le managed to steal past her defender a few times with nifty spin moves but failed to convert.

RGS #12 Wu You constantly troubled the Cedar defence with her height advantage and managed to get many underbasket shots, but Cedar #13 Alethea managed quite a few interceptions which led to Cedar fastbreaks. However, the tight RGS defence limited the scoring of Cedar in the first half of the match, only allowing #4 Jia Le and #5 Bathilda to make a few shots in the third and fourth quarters.

RGS #6 Kai Wen drew many fouls but the Cedar defence put up a strong fight to get the rebounds, especially #13 Alethea. RGS captain #4 Cheryl had a perfect shooting record with two out of two three-pointers, both made from the 45-degree angle. In the third quarter, there was some marking confusion as RGS switched to a 4 guard and 1 centre gameplay, making it hard for the Cedar defence to break down the RGS attack which resulted in some underbaskets for RGS #6.

Towards the end of the game, RGS #12 Wu You had a chance to make a basket in the dying seconds but missed. RGS tried to make a final attempt but the final whistle had blown. RGS is likely to meet SCGS in the semi-final with Cedar meeting Zhonghua, who beat SCGS 40-28 in the last match of the group stages.
