Catholic High School, Wednesday, March 11, 2009 – Raffles Institution displayed their batting credentials with an impressive 17-3 win over Maris Stella High to clinch the B Division national softball title in threatening weather conditions. With the win, they have successfully added the B title to their C title won last year.

Maris Stella had threatened early when their bases were loaded in the first inning. However, although their fourth batter connected well with the pitch, it flew high and straight into the grateful hands of an RI outfielder.

That catch signalled RI’s turn to bat and they certainly did not disappoint their supporters who had largely filled up the Catholic High sports stadium. The venue was chosen as a neutral ground between the two finalists.

RI proceeded to demolish Maris Stella with four runs, seven runs, four runs and two runs in the first, second, third and fourth innings respectively.

The Maris Stella High team were left rueing their chances as they conceded numerous runs through an error-ridden performance.

In the end, there was mercifully no need for RI to bat for their fifth inning as the winner for the game was evident for all to see.

Despite their loss, Maris Stella High teacher-in-charge William Ian Quayle was glad that his team made it into the final.

“The key to today’s game is to play well and with sportsmanship, not winning the title,” he declared before the game.

“If we have behaved like scholars and gentlemen, we would have won regardless of the result.”

Well said, Mr Quayle!
