CCAB, Monday, March 2, 2009 - Yuying Secondary defeated the Singapore Chinese Girls School (SCGS) 68-50 in the B Division Girls South Zone Basketball semi-final.

Yuying had no answer as SCGS pulled away to an eight-point lead. Despite some Yuying supporters yelling rude comments while SCGS were playing and making free throws, SCGS maintained their composure and lead for most of the first quarter.

But with 59 seconds to go, Yuying grabbed the lead, only to see it erased by a layup by the SCGS #8. But Chua Wei Kiaw (Yuying, #6) drew a foul and converted one free throw to end the quarter tied 19-19.

Anxiety began to set into the SCGS camp in the second quarter. Yuying quickly grabbed the lead and built up on it. Several bad passes marred the SCGS game, with Wei Kiaw (Yuying, #6) stealing many balls and converting them into breakaway points. SCGS also began missing many shots and losing rebounds. Confidence in the Yuying camp grew as they took a comfortable lead and outscored SCGS by eight points to end the first half leading 38-30.

Yuying did not let up the pressure in the third quarter and continued to build up a large lead. SCGS continued to miss many opportunities while Yuying converted almost all of their chances. Straight forward drives to the basket and free throws all missed their target, much to the exasperation of the SCGS coach, Chiew Poh Leng.

Struggling for points, the SCGS players started becoming slightly aggressive in their tackles, leading to rough contact. Yuying capitalised on this to outscore SCGS 21-14 in the quarter.

With Yuying entering the fourth quarter leading by 15 points, Alana (SCGS, #11) tried to make her presence felt by driving constantly towards the basket. But catching up was a herculean task. Despite lagging behind by a huge margin, SCGS coach Chiew continued to shout to her players “Don’t be lazy!”.

Yuying outscored SCGS nine points to six in the fourth quarter, with Alana (SCGS, #11) scoring all six of her team’s points. She was responsible for 13 consecutive points before the end of the game.

Yuying will now face Cedar Girls’ in the South Zone Final at Yio Chu Kang Sports Hall on Tuesday, March 10th, 1pm.

SCGS will play Raffles’ Girls School in the 3/4th placing match at CCAB on Wednesday, March 4th, 1pm.
