River Valley High, Saturday, 7 February 2009 – Jurong West Secondary beat West Spring Secondary 29-13 in a B Division West Zone Netball Championship game to keep their hopes of entering the second round alive.

Jurong West had lost to Unity Secondary last week by a narrow 26-24 margin and victory against West Spring was vital.

The match started slow with both teams unable to settle immediately. Shooting trouble for the Goal Attack of West Spring, and bad passes from the Goal Keeper of Jurong West did not give either team a chance to secure a comfortable lead. The first quarter ended with Jurong West taking a one-point 6-5 lead.

In the first few minutes of the second quarter, West Spring had several turnovers due to poor footwork from Jurong West. However, West Spring did not seem to treasure the opportunities given. Inaccurate passes from the West Spring feeders allowed Jurong West to convert the turnovers into shots by their sharp shooter, Man Ping.

Entering the third quarter of the game, Jurong West finally found a flow to their attack. Jurong West also tightened their man-on-man defence, limiting West Spring to only two goals in this quarter and widened the lead to 22-11.

Jurong West continued their strong defence and dominated the fourth quarter to evetually win the game 29-13.

Their win gave Jurong West a 1-win-1-loss (1-1) record. Unity and West Spring also have similar 1-1 records. The teams need to win the rest of their games in order to qualify for a spot in the second round.
