Nanyang Technological University, Monday, January 12, 2009 – The Nanyang Technological University (NTU) women’s basketball team overcame Republic Polytechnic 60-51 in a Group B game of the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Basketball Championship.

With the NTU men whitewashing RP, it was now the women's turn to show what they were made of. The
RP women team were no pushovers after they had registered a 60-42 win over SMU in their previous game.

However, NTU had beaten the same opponents 74-43 margin, and so this was a match to watch.

NTU went on the attack right from the get-go as they dominated the early proceedings and hit RP on the break early on with their speed and passing.

RP, on the contrary, were having problems getting settled and this affected their passing game. The silly mistakes by the team didn't help their cause as they found it hard to score.

By the end of the first quarter, NTU had accumulated a comfortable 10-point lead at 21-11.

The second quarter started where the first half left off with NTU dictating play and RP trying to get settled. With their fast-paced attack, NTU brole RP down with tremendous ease.

This did not last long however, as a series of turnovers by NTU gave RP a chance to settle into the match. As a result, the team from Woodlands strung a few points together with #5 and #10 contributing significantly.

Despite this, NTU held on to their lead and extended it to 13 points.

The third quarter proved to be much tighter with both teams scoring 10 points. The paced of the game increased, and the referee was called upon to make many calls. Despite having many free throws, RP failed to make them count with poor shooting.

Both teams cancelled each other out in the final 10 minutes with NTU only scoring nine points throughout the quarter.

A late spell by RP gave supporters hope, with the RP #10 dictating play. Although they outscored NTU 13-10 in the fourth quarter, it was too little too late as NTU held on to win the match 60-51.

With this win, NTU improved to a perfect 2-wins-0-losses record while RP fell to 1-2.
