Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Wednesday, October 22, 2008 – Republic Polytechnic (RP) secured their 3rd place finish in style as they beat Ngee Ann Polytechnic(NP) 7-2 in a Polytechnic-Institute of Technical Education (POL-ITE) Women’s Floorball Championship match.

NP had a point to prove as they were still on a high after drawing their last match against one of the title favorites, ITE. But RP had no intention of allowing NP to walk all over them, as RP #22 immediately flashed a shot that went just wide of the goal after RP had won the face off.

RP continued to pressurize NP, they duly opened the scoring soon after as #23 was left totally unmarked as she took control of a pass and she had an easy shot which left the NP goalie with no chance.

NP’s refusal to let RP dominate them showed as they fought strongly for every ball and constantly pushed forward looking for that equalizer. But they had to always be on the alert, as the RP #13 was very lively as she constantly took the ball and moved it up into the attacking 3rd for her team which caused the NP defense lots of problems.

NP got their well deserved equalizer, courtesy of the napping RP defense, when their #23 was left totally unmarked at the blind side of goal. A shot came in which the RP goalie parried right into the path of #23 and she delightfully tapped it into the empty net for the equalizer.

But the cheers from the home crowd were soon silenced, as upon restart RP #8 picked up a stray ball and unleashed a drag shot which the NP goalie could not even react to end the period 2-1 in RP’s favor.

RP continued their strong form with their #13 the bane of the NP defense with her constant surges up the court. The RP lead was increased soon after to 3-1 when #23 managed to put in a rebound after the NP goalie had parried #13’s shot into her path.

NP could not attack and found themselves constantly on the back foot as they tried to cope with the waves of RP attacks. RP added another two goals – and both were scored in a similar way – when the NP defense allowed RP #12 and #16 space to maneuver right in front of goal. Both did not disappoint to make the score 5-1.

The NP #24 to her credit refused to give up and she fought bravely for every ball, hassling the RP defenders whenever she had the chance.

The RP goalie made a good reaction save when she denied the NP #23 with an outstretched leg to preserve her team’s 5-1 lead at the end of the second period.

RP continued to pile on the misery for NP when they immediately scored on the restart. Winning the face off, they put a through ball to #22 who was left in the open who turned and duly put a shot past the goalie for a 6-1 lead.

The seventh RP goal soon arrived when their #16 was put through on goal and she simply put a drag shot right past the goalie to make it 7-1.

The NP defense were now in shambles and there were many goal mouth scrambles where they nearly conceded more. Furthermore, they were unable to push up for an attack.

On the one occasion where they did managed to push up they scored their second goal. The NP #23 raced determinedly for a through ball to get past two strolling RP defenders before placing it easily past the RP goalie for to make it 2-7.

As the game drew to an end, the RP players were trying shots from range hoping to add another goal to their tally but to little effect.
