Delta Sports Complex, Monday. 4 August, 2008 – In the 3rd/4th placing match in the C Division Girls Hockey Championship, Crescent Girls’ School beat arch rivals CHIJ St. Theresa’s Convent in a convincing 2-0 victory.
Both teams have produced many past and present national team members and although this may not be the championship match, much was at stake as the two old rivals battled it out for pride and honour.
The first half was a close encounter with both teams attacking at regular intervals but rarely had any real goal scoring opportunities. One of the best chance fell to Crescent when a Saint Theresian mis-hit a free hit which led to a quick break for the Crescent team. Catching St Theresa’s on their back foot, their forward, Nadiah, led the counter attack. Dribbling past the last defender, she had only the keeper to beat but failed to control her reverse stick shot, sending the ball wide. Before the stroke of half time, Crescent scored their first goal via a short corner. A well executed set piece saw Crescent’s Forward, Nadia, drill the ball in the bottom corner of the goal.
With the first goal advantage, Crescent grew in confidence and firmly took control of the second half. They created several more chances but it was yet another short corner that gave them their second goal. In a similar move to the first goal, the ball was worked to Nadia, who drilled the ball firmly into the goal again. This second goal sealed St Theresa’s fate and took the fight out of them. With a two goal cushion, Crescent easily saw out the game to emerge as winners of the game and go one up on their great rivals.
