Nanyang Polytechnic, Tuesday, July 22, 2008 – Republic Polytechnic (RP) won the battle against the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) 22-0 in a Polytechnic-Institute of Technical Education (POL-ITE) Touch Rugby Championship game.

It was a match which saw the RP girls score one touchdown after another against an ITE team trying their very best to defend.

The first touchdown was scored by Kaile (RP, #6), who had received a great pass from Shan (RP, #18) after outrunning an ITE defender. RP then went on a scoring streak and by the end of the first half, they led ITE 10-0.

RP were swift defensively, stopping their opponents repeatedly. On the trail line players would shout out, “Move right!” or “Move left!” and teammates would echo back the call.. When a teammate went up to make the touch, they would back up her up by covering the gap left behind. By doing this, RP denied ITE any space to run into.

Their strong defensive work was complemented by their fast runners in Shan, Sophie, Cho and Siti and it proved a formidable combination. They had good communication while on the attack, calling out for the ball when they were in the open or when they spied a gap to score. RP also executed dummy plays well to great effect. Notably, Su, the captain of the RP team, scored several times off the dummy passes.

As a result, ITE were left disorientated, not knowing what was going on or where to run. Losing possession constantly also did not help their cause and their onfield communication was weak. Defensively, they committed numerous offside plays to earn themselves a number of warnings from the referee.

RP try scorers:
Shan (RP, #18) – 4 tries
Siti – 3
Su – 3
Dilys – 3
Kaile (#6) – 2
Sophie – 2
