Sentosa, Saturday, July 5, 2008 – Elderly won all their matches to win the U-20 girls catetgory in the Singapore Beach Fun Touch Rugby tournament when they defeated SP Burners 4-2 in a tight final with the Elderly #10 scoring two tries.

Quality was displayed throughout the tournament with stronger teams establishing themselves in the early stages. Elderly won their first two matches by large margins as did the Rockin Elusive Bananas (REB), who lost in the semi-final. Red-Dot Rebels (RDR) were also rather dominant throughout tournament, only losing to Tomatoes in the quarter-finals. Despite arriving late for the tournament, SP burners also deserve mention as they recovered from a loss against the Retards to make it to the final.

Just like every opponent in the preliminary round, Elderly made quick work on Touch You, beating them 6-0 to progress to the semi-final to meet the Tomatoes who defeated RDR 3-2 in a close encounter. The next quarter-final was just as exciting with REB facing the Retards. The match started with REB making a quick try the moment they got the ball. It might have been the nerves, but from that point on, there seemed to be many stray passes as no particular team controlled the game. It ended with REB winning 3-0, setting up a semi-final showdown with SP burners who defeated PJC 5-2.

Elderly once again dominated in their semi-final match against Tomatoes with an easy 4-0 win. On the contrary, the other semi-final was a totally different affair. Both REB and SP burners knew they stood a great chance of winning and they went for it. It ended in favor of SP burners with an extremely close score-line of 4-3.

The final was a tight match, with Elderly scoring first, and SP burners responding immediately. SP burners put up a good fight, but the quality difference was obvious as Elderly won 4-2 with #10 scoring twice.

Over at the Boys U-20, the Rascals, a team from the Red-Dot Rebels, defeated Macam Smalam with a score 4-2 in an exciting match to win the tournament. Macam Smalam, despite losing in the final, played really well throughout the tournament.

The preliminary round was much closer compared to the girls’ category. All teams were closely matched and there was plenty of energy in every game with all teams knowing they had a chance of winning. The score-lines reflected that. However, it was The Rascals, Macam Smalam, Touch Noobs and SP Burners had the extra quality that bought them to the semi-finals.

The semi-finals displayed quality touch rugby. Both matches had great energy throughout with both teams out to win it. Attacks from both teams were fast and furious and the match was anyone’s game. Even the players couldn't keep track of the scores as the pace of the game was too fast. Macam Smalam and Rascals just nicked their matches against Touch Noobs and SP burners respectively, winning 4-3 and 5-4.

Much like the semi-finals, the final saw a close score-line as the game was a tight affair. The Rascals scored a quick try with the first attack of the game. That set the pace for the rest of the match. A comeback seemed to be on the cards as Macam Smalam equalized in the closing stages of the game. However, the Rascals bounced right back through a counter-attack with one player running right through the Macam Smalam defense when they were up-field attacking.
