CCAB, Friday, July 18, 2008 – Mayflower Secondary nearly stole victory when they came from ten points behind at the start of the fourth quarter to embark on a 24-16 run. Unfortunately, their valiant efforts fell short and Yuying Secondary managed to hang on for a hard fought 62-60 win in a second round South Zone Basketball Championship game.

With the win, Yuying Sec emerged top of their group while Mayflower had to settle for second place. More importantly, Yuying earned the match up they were looking forward when they will face Catholic High in the South Zone Championship semi-final. Catholic High finished second in the other group. Mayflower will now have to contend with favourites Raffles Institution in the other semi final.

Despite the loss, Mayflower can take comfort in the excellent showing of her key players, particularly #5 who scored 12 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter. Forward #7 was also stellar in the fourth, downing 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter alone. With the Mayflower #4 contributing another 16 points in the first three quarters, the “big three” accounted for 53 of the team’s 62 points.

Their display was not enough though. Yuying Sec, relying on a well-balanced team performance, held on for a deserved win.
