National Inter-School A Division Boys Floorball Championships: Tampines Sports Complex, Thursday, July 10, 2008 – Raffles Junior College (RJC) showed they were strong contenders for the championship with an 8-1 hammering of Millennia Institute (MI). With this win, RJC catapulted to the top of their table on goal difference ahead of Victoria Junior College (VJC). Despite MI’s best efforts at stopping RJC, they were simply overpowered by the speed and accuracy of RJC who also had a strong run in last year’s championship.

RJC began their scoring frenzy with a goal by their #2 at the 01:33 mark. It was such a strong shot that upon the MI goalkeeper’s leg, the ball did not stop but bounced into goal instead. 1-0 to RJC. A rare penalty was then given to RJC after a scuffle in the penalty box. Goalscorer RJC #2 stepped up to the challenge. As he neared the goal, RJC #2 attempted to distract the MI goalkeeper by faking shots but to no avail. In this battle of wits, the MI goalkeeper kept his poise and saved the ball. Buoyed, the MI defense continued to deny RJC any more goalscoring chances for the rest of first period.

This was not to last for MI once the second period began. Perhaps due to a smaller squad, MI had fewer line changes and substitutes and that tested the stamina of the team sorely. In the second period, RJC widened their lead by scoring a barrage of goals. At 04:47, the RJC #13 sent a deadly accurate shot from mid-court straight into goal, catching the MI keeper totally unaware to make it 2-0. Undeterred by the penalty miss earlier, the RJC #2 made up for his miss with two clear goals at 8:02 and 11:54 for a 4-0 lead.

MI started out strong in the third period with their #10 sending a pass to teammate #12 who promptly knocked the ball into the goal neatly at the 02:58 mark. MI could not enjoy their goal for too long however as less than a minute later, RJC replied with deadly venom with their #18 volleying the ball into the net to make it 5-1. RJC poured on the goals, scoring at 06:42, 08:43 and 13:49 with their #12, #15 and #18 banging in the goals.

Although the score was lopsided in RJC’s favor, it was heartwarming to see MI playing their hearts out and not giving up until the final whistle.

This Wednesday, 16th July at Tampines Sports Hall:
RJC will play against VJC in a top-of-the-table clash at 2.45pm
NYJC and MI will play their last match against each other at 12.15pm.
