Once in a while, someone will come in to say something nice about Red Sports. We are grateful. Then, once in a while, someone will come in to take a bite out of Red Sports, or specifically, me. So here, for everybody to see, is the lecture I got for not covering the plate final in person:
Said jjcian: “First of all, I am not a rugger. I am just unhappy that it took so long for this story to be up. But since it's up, I thank Mr. Ng Cheng Cong. But you les, you haven't been helpful at all. My school's ruggers played hard and played well to get into the Plate Finals. I believed they deserved recognition way earlier than the Cup Finals. However, the Cup Finals were reported just a day after their match and it took 17 days to report our match. The story was also covered by you, and this raises a question. Why weren't you there at the Plate Finals? It may be just a PLATE final to you, but for our ruggers and cj ruggers, it meant a whole lot more. So can you imagine the pain, coupled by the lack of recognition, our ruggers felt? I am a close friend of one of the ruggers, and I was told by him that he felt that the Plates are not taken seriously at all. And that after all the injuries suffered by both teams during the run to the Plate Final, he thought that we deserved more credit. So I believe I'm speaking on behalf of the whole JJ team and the CJ team.
Lastly, I think you should not treat us like small children. "Next year I'll be telling the volunteers to go cover another game/sport to save themselves the abuse." That sentence sounds like a petty comeback and we're not buying it. As this is only a Plate Final, I dare you to try the same move on the Cup Final. Try waiting a long time before publishing. I guarantee you will get flamed, possibly worse than this.
Thank you and don't try and think of another comeback.”
This comment is with reference to the plate final between Jurong Junior College and Catholic Junior College.
So this guy (or girl) thinks I should be at the rugby plate final regardless of whatever else I may have to do on that day (for the record, I babysit my son every Friday afternoon, and the plate final was on a Friday afternoon). Even if I was not, and was at another sports event, jjcian thinks I owe it to the JJC rugby team to be there.
So what do you guys think?
Thanks, tingshan, winghan, Jenny, jj, jneo, melvin, sahail, prabs, ziderz, dominic.
Much appreciated. 😉
Anyway, one more time, just for the fun of it, everybody now:
YOU SEND IT, WE POST IT.
Any story on any sports event or game involving your school, I will post it. Ok? If you don’t see it, it’s cos I didn’t get it.
please dont disgrace our jc can?
we lost the match yet you still so anxious for redsports to report about our loss?
Uncle les, I am faithful follower of this site and i am very appreciative of you covering many various sport. On behalf of my school, I apologise to those rude comments.
P.S. Uncle les, could you check whether the user ‘hi’ and ‘jjcian’ shared the same IP address? If yes, I think he/she is a jjcian who only want to bring the school image down as he did so in other jjcian’s blog.
there are definitely a couple of readers who take redsports for granted and assume that the site should be updated like yahoo and google sites where news are there immediately. They never realised the amount of staff and resources that redsports have and it is not possible for uncle les and the other volunteers to be able to update all results and stories immediately and attend all games.
Go uncle les, redsports all the way!!
Without redsports i would not be interested in sports! Thanks Uncle Les
uncle les, you’ve been doing a greeeat job. there wouldn’t even be coverage without redsports, so thank you for everything you and the redsports team have done.
cheers!
🙂
Oh Uncle Les has done a great job.
uncle les isn’t perfect or anything. He still does have his own life. Plus, he does try his best to cover every sport. He can’t be teleporting around to cover every sport anytime or anyday. So please, think twice before even saying such stuff. Why not you go cover the many sports uncle les is covering?
Sure, every sportsmen would like some recognition for the time and energy invested into the sport not to mention the things they may have had to give up in order to play the sport. It is our human nature.
But, any athlete who truly loves ‘his’ or ‘her’ sport would not be bothered by the ‘lack of recognition’.
Besides, you clearly haven’t read the mission and statement of this website.
WHICH IS ‘The focus of this website is to bring the passionate, vibrant world of Singapore sports to light’
This website was founded out of the genuine LOVE for sports, viewers don’t pay a subscription fee to read the articles.
Shouldn’t you have done something when you noticed that the story wasn’t published as quickly as you liked. Like maybe send in a spectator’s account of the game. The founder and team of the website has always welcomed a spectator’s account of the game.
17 days, you actually counted ?
To be honest, the fact that the report DOES get published here speaks millions.
Ask not what others can do for you but what you can do for others.
Kudo to the redsports team for everything!
jjcian obviously thinks the world owes that person something, totally unappreciative of the things the writers such as uncle les have done for the students in Singapore.
Dear uncle les,
Please ignore that person’s comment, EVEN if you are paid for this you should deserve all our respect, appreciation and thanks for doing all that you’ve done. What’s more is you aren’t. Only once in awhile you guys are appreciated, my apologies as i have a fault of not thanking every single one of the writeups and photographs you guys did voluntarily. But at least the best i did was not to criticize what you guys are not doing, unlike some ungrateful people.
And thank you all, the redsports team.
I hope this message uncle les wants to send out is for us to take a step back and look how succesful this website has been. All with the efforts of volunteers. Maybe we should, and start thinking how we can contribute to this website ourselves.
For jjcian: For being such a coward, you should start being brave for once and reveal your identity and stop hiding behind your school’s name. Unless you want us all to stereotype students of your school, which i’d rather not. But you, you are a disgrace to your school.
I fully agree the Plate ruggers deserve recognition, as with all school sports. That’s why Red Sports was set up.
I fully understand that 17 days is a long time to wait for your story. That’s why Red Sports is reader-generated. If you can’t wait, send us your story and we’ll put it up. We promise.
And yet, JJCian is accusing Les of villainy because he personally went to the Cup final but did not personally go to the Plate final.
How selfish.
JJCian, who says he is not a rugger, claims to be “speaking on behalf of the whole JJ team and the CJ team"
How presumptuous.
JJCian asks Les to “imagine the pain" he caused by not being there.
How ridiculous.
It seems to me that it is really JJCian who “hasn’t been helpful at all." Is it any wonder Les treated him like a small child?
JJcian,
Recognition has to be earned. You don’t gain recognition by whining willfully like a child. If you act like a kid, you deserve to be treated like a kid.
So quit using Les as the bogey man to channel all your angst about the public’s disinterest in what is essentially the Inter-Toto cup of school rugby.
The media reflects public sentiment. While you may be able to paint a facade of glory and bathe in this constructed self-aggrandizement by begging for publicity, you can never feign genuine public interest in a news event. And if the public is truly disinterested about the rugby plate final, you’ll just have face reality and learn to live with it.
It’s fine to hate the message, just don’t shoot the messenger.
JJCian, you shouldnt flame it on les. I mean les cant be everywhere watching every sport. If you want coverage so bad, why not you yourself post it. Everyone will gladly appreciate that. When there wasnt redsports, theres zero coverage about school sports except in papers. Really, JJCian’s comment was really redundant. You kept thinking that he didnt cover it cause “just a plate final”. He got some other important stuffs to do so yeah celebrate with your team/school.
Hi all, I think this is but an isolated case of un-greatfulness. This site is beyond amazing, but I’ve not commented here before. The articles are extremely well reported on and the pictures are amazing. Its great knowing many of our schools’ sporting competitions are being so well covered. Me, as a reader, could not possibly ask for more. I hope the editor/s of this site, dont get disheartened and continue doing the excellent job they’re already doing. Here’s to Redsports!! 🙂
this site has managed to feed me with many rugby updates and im grateful for that. We cant expect others to do so much for us and beside Uncle les has stuff to do. Like what Crapster and junwei said, think twice before you say something.
Uncle les, you’ve done a good job already.
cheers,
zid
this is the only site u get updates on A DIV SPORTS! RESPECT THAT!
Yes hi, Uncle Les has often contemplated why he bothers to continue with this site. This site draws a huge sum of money and he has to rely on sponsorship and other means to keep it running.
I don’t deny that we are not the ONLY website covering Singapore sports. A couple of websites have started following in Red Sports’ footsteps after seeing the “success” (or failure to some readers) of this site. But I regularly surf through all the other sites to check out information, and if they had the same volume of traffic like we do, they are going to be flamed more than we are.
To all the people who don’t know how we work, we have:
Uncle Leslie, editor of the site who runs almost about everything. Shooting, writing, interviewing, making money etc. Common target of flames and insults. Has a family to feed, a website to run, and brats online to deal with. I suppose that you agree that if he has a job to do, which can earn him money, do you think he should go for the paying job rather than a sports event which does not? Would you rather see this site cover the game and shut down due to lack of funds, or the site continue, with the volume of sports coverage picking up.
Uncle Bob, tech guru of the site. He maintains all the formatting and codes, and maintains all these pages for brats to flame Red Sports with their comments.
Auntie Dawn, Jan, Laura, Writers who give Red Sports a more professional touch with their writing and knowledge.
The volunteers, they cover sports event which uncle les cannot single handedly do. They have to coordinate among themselves to make sure they can go around to cover more sports. After that, they have to process their pictures, draft their stories and submit them for approval. Following that, the editors have to pick up the story and check through, looking for any code errors etc. THEN it gets posted up.
Red Sports does not have a full time staff. Many of us have full time jobs out there. Yet we try to keep the site running, covering a sport event in our free time to give coverage to our athletes.
But still, we have people who hide behind nicknames and leave behind comments which criticise us for our efforts.
Yes, we are not perfect. We cannot cover every single sport in Singapore. That is why Uncle Les has reiterated time and time again that WE ARE A READER GENERATED SITE. The volunteers here can crudely be termed as “frequent reader contributors”. Anyone can contribute to us. We are slowly venturing out into the other sports as our more “regular” volunteers increase in numbers and have more free time. Take a look at your newspapers everyday, we have enough story and pictures in a good week to fill up the school features in our national newspapers for at least half a year. So why not consider what you would have to deal with for not Red Sports?
If you can contribute to us, please do so. You will be forever appreciated.
Think twice before you submit a critical comment about us.
this site dosent cover all types of sports in singapore, as u if u notice there’s only a few ppl working on it, and it’s impossible, uncle les could actually teleport, next time before u comment, pls think twice, or even thrice.
shut up la hi. one person complain doesnt mean everyone does.
this is a good site.
u can find another one for singapore sports out there?
shut down this site since everyone is complaining
