Singapore Basketball Centre, Tuesday, March 18, 2008 – Raffles Institution (RI) suffered a 38-60 loss to Chung Cheng High (Main) in a B-Division National Championships basketball match.
The first quarter was a rather quiet affair with both teams taking it slow. Chung Cheng High out shot RI by 4 points to lead 8-4 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw an on fire Chung Cheng High as they scored basket after basket while the Raffles Institution players could only look on. Despite several valiant attempts to score for their team, many of the shots by the RI players did not find their way into the basket. Rather, the Chung Cheng High players were constantly in the RI’s defensive zone to grab the rebounds. In particular, Hong Kah Qi, the Chung Cheng High #8 stole possession of the ball several times to deny Raffles any chance of scoring. By the end of the second quarter, Chung Cheng High were leading 24-13.
The third quarter saw a similar scene as the Chung Cheng HIgh players continued their dominance. RI tried their very best to break their opponents’ scoring streak, but were outscored 14-20 in the quarter.
The Rafflesian spirit is definitely not a myth as the fourth quarter saw an RI comeback. They managed to hold Chung Cheng High to only 14 points while scporing 14 points themselves. However, this was not enough to claw back the huge lead which Chung Cheng High had built up over the earlier three quarters.
Top scorer:
Colin Chou (Chung Cheng High #13) – 22 points
