CCAB, Wednesday, Feb 27 2008 – A surprisingly resilient St Andrew’s Secondary pushed group favourites Gan Eng Seng Secondary all the way before eventually succumbing 50-58 in a second round South Zone Basketball Championship group X game.

In fact, led by their captain #10, St Andrew’s actually tied Gan Eng Seng 16-16 in the first quarter before taking a massive nine-point 32-23 lead at the end of the first half.

Gan Eng Seng came charging back in the third quarter, after some stern talking to by their coach. However, the SAS players still managed to play some physical defense and score some inside baskets to maintain a slight 43-41 at end of the third quarter.

Gan Eng Seng then displayed their pedigree in the final quarter when their point guard Ng Zhao Feng (#9) scored most of his eventual 26 points. Ng Wei Sin (#13) of Gan Eng Seng also chipped in with 11 points while Ng Yi Chun (#7) contributed 9 points for his team.

St Andrew’s, on the other hand, was led by #5’s 16 points and #10’s 13 points.

Notes: In another group X qualifying match, RI easily beat Serangoon Gardens to finish with a 3-wins-1-loss record. Their qualification for the semi-finals will now depend on the outcome of the Gan Eng Seng vs Peirce match on Friday. A slim win by Peirce will ensure that both Gan Eng Seng and Peirce will qualify at RI’s expense.
