The CCAB pitch was not well-maintained and was patched with sand, mud and some grass. Some players fell when dribbling in muddy patches, many had grazed knees and elbows, and no one had a clean jersey. Both teams played hard, but the VJ boys deserve the extra commendation, given that they were coach-less in a way because Mr Tan Yew Hwee, VJ’s soccer coach, was not present at the match.

The first goal was scored by VJC in the second half but RJ secured the equaliser soon after. During extra time, both teams came onto the pitch with renewed vigour but no one was able to close up the match by scoring the golden goal.

Penalties followed and VJ lost 6-7. The VJ boys were heartbroken and so were the VJ supporters, many of whom cried along with the soccer boys. Commendably, RJC supporters held their cheers till after the Victorian anthem was sung. RJ and VJ supporters were respectful during the penalties with maintained silence before and during each penalty kick. However, a group of MI students were present amongst the VJC supporters and
their conduct was anything but acceptable.

VJC did not deserve to lose but neither did RJC. It all boiled down to luck during the penalties.

Congrats to RJ.
