Home Team Academy, Tuesday, April 15, 2014 — Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) stormed their way into the Police Cup final with a 43–0 win over St. Joseph’s Institution (SJI). Joshua Goh (ACS(I) #13) led the charge with two tries, as ACS(I) were able to put seven tries on the board against SJI.

SJI’s defence held up early on, as they were able to push back ACS(I)’s attacks for the first 15 minutes. However, Jeremy Choy (ACS(I) #9) broke the deadlock for ACS(I) by forcing his way over for the first try. From that point on, SJI were on the back foot.

ACS(I) made good use of the flanks to gain territory, passing the ball quickly towards the wings to create space. Joshua Goh (ACS(I) #13) made a good run to score the second try, evading two SJI defenders to score. Shortly after, Dan Yuet (ACS (I) #8) added a third, as SJI’s defence started to crumble. ACS(I) took a 19–0 lead going into the half-time break.

The second half saw ACS(I) settle into a rhythm. Their passes were more stable and their front pack was methodical in using their strength to gain territory in the SJI half. Great running by Jeremy (ACS(I) #9) helped to free up Lucas Tay (ACS(I) #11) for another try.

SJI seemed overwhelmed at times, as their defence were unable to match ACS(I)’s cuts and runs. When they did get the ball, it was usually deep in their own territory. This forced them to punt the ball into touch in a bid to recover more ground.

ACS(I) eventually came away with the 43–0 win. They will now look to defend their 2013 title against either St. Andrew’s Secondary or Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road).

ACS(I) vice-captain, Joshua Goh (#13), said, “We were not clinical in the first half. We made too many careless errors. The score margin could have been bigger with better execution. We have lots of things to work on before the final. Both Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) and Saint Andrew’s are worthy contenders. However, I hope it will be the same as last year, where it was an all-ACS final.”
