Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, February 21, 2014 — New Town Secondary School made it wins for both the Boys’ and Girls’ teams today by taking out School of Science and Technology (SST) 62–23 in the second round of the West Zone B Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.
Jeremy Anand (New Town #8) led all scorers with 17 points, while Marcus Chan (#6) and Ryan Pek (#10) led SST with 7 points apiece.
New Town ran the fast break at every opportunity possible, catching SST wrong-footed on many occasions. The bulk of their points came from this strategy. SST’s frontcourt was extremely weak, allowing New Town players to get into the paint easily. This gave New Town easy chances to score and grab offensive rebounds.
New Town had a lot of errant passes in the second quarter, which led to turnovers. SST tried running half-court sets in a bid to catch up, but their execution left something to be desired. New Town continued their fast break onslaught, SST had no reply at all. New Town went into the half-time break up 28–10.
The second half was more of the same story. New Town went on a 13–0 run to start the quarter. By then, they effectively put the match away for good. SST did nothing to help themselves back into the game. Driving lanes into the paint were left open, inviting New Town players to get in for easy shots. The New Town players also showed good run outs, leading to easy lay ups for them. New Town ended the game with a 62–23 margin, helping them in their bid to qualify for the zonal semi-final.
New Town captain, Denilson Soh (#11), said, “We played very badly in the first half. It was not up to our standard. We came back in the second half playing better. We have to work on improving our defence and long ranged shooting for the upcoming games.”
