Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, February 12, 2014 — Bowen Secondary (BWS) needed a late spurt to help them sneak past Woodgrove Secondary (WGS) 47–43 in the second round of the North Zone B Division Boys Basketball Championship. Teo Yung Jin (WGS #13) led all scorers with 15 points, while Yap Chun Neng (BWS #11) led his team with 12 points.

The outcome leaves both teams joint-third in Group X with 2–2 records. Both teams are still in the running for a qualification spot for the semi-finals, provided the results of the final matches go in their favour.

Woodgrove showed good ball movement early on in the first quarter. They swung the ball quickly on the perimeter, leading to open shots for their shooters. This gave Woodgrove the early advantage in the game. However, Bowen started to settle down on defence as they got defensive stops that they converted with fast breaks on the other end. This allowed Bowen to come back, taking an 11–8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the pace slow down on both sides. Both teams turned the ball over regularly, leading to little shot attempts. Woodgrove found success in forcing Bowen to one side of the court but Bowen still found a way to put the ball in the basket.

The third quarter was mildly frustrating for Bowen. They had close attempts at the rim, but their shots inexplicably rimmed out. Coupled with some slipshod defence, this allowed Bowen back into the game as they pulled close, ending the third quarter down only 29–30.

The final quarter saw the teams trade basket for basket throughout the quarter. It was a tense affair for both teams, as benches could be seen cheering each made basket. This continued up to the final two minutes, when Bowen found a spark to pull away convincingly. A putback by Chun Neng (Woodgrove #11) in the final minute helped seal the win as Bowen took the game 47–43.

Bowen captain, Ng Jian Wei (#5) said, ” We didn’t play well for the first two quarters, we were too nervous and too rushed.”
