Presbyterian High School, Monday, April 1, 2013 — Bukit Panjang Government High defeated Catholic High 2–0 (25–6, 25–18) in the National B Division Boys Volleyball Championship. Both teams will not be advancing into the semi-finals.

Before the game, Bukit Panjang picked up a point from their 1–2 (19–25, 25–22, 23–25) loss to Dunman Secondary. They also lost to Xinmin Secondary 0–2 (24–26, 18–25). Catholic High had no points as they lost 0–2 (8–25, 15–25) to Dunman and were defeated by Xinmin 0–2 (18–25, 22–25).

Since Xinmin had picked up six points and Dunman five from the previous four games, it was impossible for either Bukit Panjang or Catholic High to proceed into the semi-finals.

In the first set, Bukit Panjang established an early 4–2 lead. The two-point lead was stretched to five at 10–5. A six-point streak ensued from Bukit Panjang, allowing them to lead 16–5. Catholic High responded with a point before another nine-point streak by Bukit Panjang, ending the set quickly at 25–6.

The second set saw Bukit Panjang having an early lead at 4–1. Three consecutive points by Catholic High saw them tie at 4–4 and then 5–5. Another three-point streak by Catholic High gave them a temporal lead, as it was quickly countered with another three from Bukit Panjang, tying the set at 8–8.

Both teams did not deviate much from their opponents until the score 13–13. Three points were scored by Bukit Panjang, of which only one was responded by Catholic High. At 14–16, another three-point streak by Bukit Panjang saw them five points ahead, 19–14.

The five point-gap was kept up till 21–16. Catholic scored two to reduce the difference to 21–18. However, Bukit Panjang went for the kill with a final unanswered four-point effort, allowing them to take home the second and last set for their season, 25–18.

“Today’s game was some (Catholic High’s players) of their first match. It was a good time to gain match experience,” said Catholic High’s captain, Eugene Ng (#7).

Eugene added: “It was a great experience for the secondary fours. We did not have much service errors. Bukit Panjang were stronger than us but I feel that we needed to communicate more. In the first match of the season, we were nervous and scared. Many of them kept their fears to themselves. But overall today, we did much better than our South Zone performance.”

Eugene also commented that he personally felt that his team played their best against Dunman Secondary in this competition.

When asked for his comments on the game, Bukit Panjang’s captain, Chua Yizhe (#5), chuckled and said: “We played relatively well because there was no pressure. We did well in our receiving and spiking. Our teamwork needs to be improved on though. But throughout the competition, we have become more bonded with one another.”
