Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, August 15, 2008 – Unity Secondary thrashed Dunman High 59-25 in a C Division Boys Basketball Championship quarter-final match. With this win, Unity is now leading Group X and is most likely to progress into the semi-finals with one game to go. Dunman High has one win and one loss, and will have to battle it out with Jurong Secondary on Monday, 18 August, for the final spot in the semi-finals.
Both teams started off rather evenly. The tip off went in favour of Unity as they charged towards the hoop unobstructed. However, as Unity made their attack, a Unity player did a fake move, passing the ball to a teammate who wasn’t expecting it and the ball smashed into his face.
Yeong Dun Jie (Dunman, #7) on the other hand, started his team’s scoring with a 3-pointer. Unity put up a strong defence, going up with their Dunman opponents to challenge the ball. Calvin Goh (Dunman, #11) drew a foul from his opponent, successfully converting two free throws. The first quarter ended with Unity leading 11-9.
The second quarter saw Unity start on a scoring run as they exploited gaps in the Dunman defence to score point after point. Dunman struggled in this quarter and only managed to put in five points compared to 15 for Unity. The game went into half time with Unity leading 26-14.
As the second half started, Unity continued their rampage, scoring a whopping 16 points. The guys in yellow were simply unstoppable as they exploited their opponents’ weaknesses. The man-to-man marking stopped several Dunman scoring attempts and there were many aerial blocks as the Unity players challenged their opponents for rebounds. Dunman only managed to put in three points in the quarter and trailed by a staggering 25 points at end of the third.
The final quarter saw Dunman try to put up a fight but fall short. Unity #5 started off with a 3-pointer, extending his team’s lead further. Brandon Lim (Dunman, #15) scored the first two points of the quarter for his team, and converted two free throws soon after. Towards the end of the match Brandon (Dunman, #15) won another chance for a free throw. Having failed to convert several chances earlier on, there was some pressure from his coach as they urged him to score. He successfully managed to convert this time round.
However, Unity eventually outscored Dunman 17-8 in the final quarter to wrap up the game 59-25.
Top scorers:
Peter Soo (Unity, #5) – 13 points
Brandon Lim (Dunman, #15) – 10 points
David Soo (Unity, #7) – 10 points
