SIM MPSH, Monday, July 17, 2017 — Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) pulled through and edged out Republic Polytechnic (RP) 74-62 in the semi-final of the National Youth Sports Institute (NYSI) Basketball League.

With this win, SIM remain undefeated with a 5-0 win-loss record and will advance to meet NUS in the final.

On the other hand, this game gives RP a 3-2 win-loss record.

Priscilla Wong (RP #5) knocked down a jumper to start off the game. RP played aggressive full court man-to-man defense to limit the time SIM have for offense. However, SIM were able to make use of their bigger and taller centers to score in the paint.

Both sides were aggressive and traded baskets. SIM made use of their size and height advantage to score in the paint while RP made use of their sharp shooting to score. Panmeline Liew (SIM #11) got the basket and one to give SIM a 14-12 lead with time winding down, but Priscilla Wong (RP #5) knocked down back to back threes off a steal to end the first quarter. RP led 18-14.

Priscilla Wong (RP #5) continued to stay hot from three point range, scoring to keep RP ahead. She had a game-high 26 points scoring 7 three-point shots in the course of the game. Despite that, SIM continued to hustle and make plays to keep the game close. RP led 36-32 at the half.

Making use of the half time break to solidify their game plan, SIM came out to play in the third. Priscilla Han (SIM #13) got into a groove and started to beast and feast in the paint. She made use of an array of moves to score in the paint, scoring 12 of her team-high 24 points in the third.

SIM also stepped up defensively to stop the accurate shooting of RP. SIM were able to get defensive stops as they score on the transition offense to break away. SIM outscored RP 24-12 to take the 56-48 lead after the third.

SIM continued to play good defense in the fourth. They were able to increase their defensive intensity which got RP to force their shots. This helped to contain the three point threat that RP had in the first half while SIM continued to score. With no way to break the SIM defense, the lead only got larger. SIM eventually took the game 74-62 to meet NUS in the final.

Captain Janice Ong (SIM #9) commented, “I think we just tried to cut down on our turnovers and make use of the advantage we had which would be our centers as RP don’t really have a true center. Initially we kind of started out panicky but after that we stayed calm and played according to our coach’s plan and our spots on the floor. This worked out great for us.”

“For the upcoming final, I think just do our best to create something by getting the championship. Give everything and fight so that there will be no regrets. We haven’t won a championship before so this is going to be a good chance for us so just go in and give our best next game.”
