Hougang Sports Hall, Monday, February 1, 2016 — An entertaining, topsy-turvy encounter ensued as Assumption English School (AES) met Yusof Ishak Secondary (YIS) in the National B Division Boys Floorball Championship, with the match finishing 8–8. The two teams are in preliminary round Group F.

Both teams have yet to taste victory this season, with Yusof Ishak losing to School of Science and Technology (SST) 2–6 in their first game while AES were thumped 1–10 by Northbrooks Secondary.

Within the first 7 minutes of the game, it seemed as though it was going to be a comfortable victory for Yusof Ishak, as they raced into a 3–0 lead. Yusof Ishak’s third goal was a beauty by Mohamed Nabil Irfan (#22), as he unleashed a long-range shot into the top corner.

After AES’s Firdaus bin Abdul Rahim (#13) scored his team’s first goal, Yusof Ishak replied swiftly through Mohd Sharul (#99) with another long-range effort which the AES goalkeeper fumbled into the net.

The first period ended with Yusof Ishak leading 4–2 after AES pulled one back via a penalty in which Firdaus (#13) coolly rounded the goalkeeper on the left before slotting it in.

The second period was more tense as AES succeeded in pulling another goal back just 40 seconds from the restart, through Jovian Kee (#7). Alas, AES launched attack after attack in search of the equaliser but the score remained at 3–4 going into the last period.

A goal frenzy ensued in the last period. Yusof Ishak initially scored three in a row to open up a four-goal lead, seemingly putting the game beyond AES’s grasp.

Yusof Ishak’s fifth goal was a solo effort by Muhd Fuad Adely (#7), as he ran past his marker and slid the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Fuad also scored the seventh goal while Muhd Fahis (#15) converted the sixth.

What followed were three straight goals in reply from AES, with Nicholas Teo (#4) (two goals) and Jovian Kee (#7) the scorers. With only four minutes left in the game, and Yusof Ishak leading by a precarious 7–6, the Yusof Ishak coach called for a time-out.

The time-out looked to have worked a charm for Yusof Ishak as they scored their eighth goal right afterwards, Muhd Firdaus B Roslan (#16) sending a long-range lob shot which the AES goalkeeper failed to handle, resulting in the ball slipping from his hands and trickling into the goal.

But the drama did not end there. Firdaus (#13) of AES was the hero as he scored his third and fourth goals of the match and his team’s seventh and eighth, to equalise at the death. The former was a top left-hand corner smash while the latter involved him smartly rounding behind the goalpost and slotting it in through the smallest of gaps.

Despite the manner in which his team rallied from behind multiple times in the game to earn a draw, AES captain Galistan Dwight Augustus (#11) admitted that he felt disappointed.

He said, “We have played against Yusof Ishak before and we beat them the last time, so I think that we actually underestimated them this time round. Nonetheless, my team put in a lot of effort in the last period to get the result. The other team played better than we thought.”

Looking forward to his team’s next game, Galistan added, “I hope we won’t make the same mistake again and not be over-complacent the next time round.”

AES next meet Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) on Wednesday, February 10 at Hougang Sports Hall. Yusof Ishak will meet Hillgrove Secondary on the same day at the same venue.
