CHIJ Toa Payoh, Tuesday, April 9, 2015 — CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) defeated Singapore Sports School (SSP) 40–18 to record their third consecutive victory, while handing the latter their first loss in the second round of the National B Division Netball Championship.

With this win, CHIJ remain undefeated to top group X to move into the semi-final. SSP will also advance to the semi-final after securing second spot in group X.

The defense from both sides held strong and prevented the other from scoring with ease. However, it was CHIJ that had the slim edge going into the second quarter, with a 10–6 lead.

The unerring accuracy of CHIJ’s GS, Yin Yun, further widened the lead for her team. She contributed to 11 out of 15 goals scored in this quarter, through quality lobs from her midfielders.

SSP utilised swift and accurate passes to maximise court space to attack. However, it was met with the iron defence of CHIJ, as they intercepted these lobs. This resulted in a series of turnovers that left SSP trailing 9–21 at the end of the second quarter.

Despite having a smaller frame as compared to the SSP defenders, CHIJ’s GA, Rindy Lok, executed several good runs and second passes to her shooter to push the offensive tempo for her team. Together with timely centre passes and powerful rebounding by their defenders, CHIJ further extended their lead to 36–12.

Not to be outdone, SSP came out fighting in the final period to narrow the score gap. The SSP players pushed themselves and made several efforts to defend and intercept the ball at the centre third. SSP eventually outscored CHIJ 6–4 in the final quarter by showing stronger team chemistry and good shooting.

Although SSP pushed their opponents till the end, it was CHIJ that emerged victorious at the final whistle.

SSP’s Sara Lightfoot said, “CHIJ were really solid on their offensive and defensive plays. They truly deserved the win.”

“Nevertheless, my team and I are determined to come back stronger for the semi-finals!” she added.
