NTU Sports and Recreational Centre Multipurpose Field, Sunday, March 9, 2014 – Abdul Rahman of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) survived a close shave in the 1/8 Elimination Round to go on to win the bronze medal in the Recurve Novice Men category at the 2014 NTU Institutional Archery Championship.

Abdul Rahman was tied with Xavier Ho of Ngee Ann Polytechnic 5—5 after the fifth scoring end. The one-arrow shootout that followed after saw Rahman hitting nine points on the target face. Xavier’s arrow then hit nine points as well. The deciding moment came when the judge measured the distance to the centre of the target from both their arrows and Rahman’s arrow was nearer. Rahman then moved on to compete in the 1/4 Elimination Rounds, the semi-finals and eventually clinched the bronze medal in his final match against Koh Zun Jie of NP.

Rahman was able to recall vividly the shootout in the 1/8 elimination round where the results were so close. He said, “For the shootout, I just remembered what my senior, Tan Si Lie, taught me – just to go in, load the arrow, take a shot and pressure the opponent. That’s just what I did.”

Indeed, that shot took him further into the competition to win bronze. Regarding his win in the final match, he added, “It was quite tricky as the wind (direction) was quite random at times. But then, I managed to push through it. I think it (the final match) was quite smooth for me.”

Crystal Wong of Ngee Ann Polytechnic also won a one-arrow shootout in the 1/4 Individual Elimination Round for the Recurve Intermediate Women category. Crystal was tied 5–5 with and Anastasia Wanda Soetjoadi of National University of Singapore (NUS). Following their one-arrow shootout, both their arrows landed on six points. However, Crystal’s arrow was nearer the centre of the target and she moved on to the semi-finals. Crystal eventually won gold in her category.

The 1/8 Elimination Round for Recurve Intermediate Men had its fair share of shootouts too. Hu Yi Ke of Singapore Management University (SMU) was tied 5–5 with Benjamin Chang of Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP). Yi Ke eventually won the shootout 8—5 against Benjamin to move on to the 1/4 Elimination Round. Yi Ke finished with a bronze.

In the gold medal matches, Ian Choo of NP defeated Phuan Wen Chuen of NUS 7—1 for Recurve Novice Men, Elena Liu edged out fellow NP archer Karen Chew 6—4 in the Recurve Novice Women category, while Louis Ang of NUS beat Justin Zhang, also of NUS, 6—0 for Recurve Intermediate Men.
