Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, February 28, 2014 — Zonal powerhouses New Town Secondary (NTSS) took down upstarts Teck Whye Secondary (TWSS) 65–40 in the second round of the West Zone B Division Boys Basketball Championship. Jeremy Koh (NTSS #8) led all scorers with 18 points, while Lim Chuan Yong (Teck Whye #9) had 15 points to lead his team.
There was plenty at stake in the game, as both teams went into the match tied for second in the group with 3–1 win–loss records. Thus, the winner of the match would move on to the zonal semi-final as well as qualify for the National Championship.
Despite the circumstances, the match was clearly in New Town’s favour from the start. They heaped defensive pressure on Chuan Yong (Teck Whye #9), stalling the Teck Whye offence.
New Town were able to control the pace of the game throughout, playing at a high tempo. They focused on making quick baskets each time, catching the Teck Whye defence off guard. Teck Whye attempted to follow the pace, but that resulted in multiple turnovers on their part. New Town were able to hold a 33–18 lead heading into the half-time break.
The second half saw New Town gradually extend the lead. Jeremy (NTSS #8) and Cleve Low (NTSS #9) led the way for New Town, shouldering the scoring load. New Town showed good hustle on the offensive boards, outjumping the Teck Whye defenders to secure the rebounds.
Teck Whye tried to rely on Chuan Yong (Teck Whye #9) to help them back into the game. He found a small degree of success in the final quarter, but it was too little too late. New Town were able to seal their fifth consecutive zonal semi-final appearance since 2010 with a 65–40 win.
