The Arena, Monday, March 20, 2017 — Marsiling Secondary School (MAR) drew 2-2 against Serangoon Secondary School (SER) to inch closer to the quarter-finals in their second game of their National B Division School Premier League 2 Football campaign.

Serangoon were left worse off with two draws after two matches while Marsiling has one win and one draw. Both sides could not break the deadlock on Monday, after a rained out high-scoring first half two weeks ago on March 6.

Serangoon’s teacher-in-charge Hafizzudin Ng said it is common for matches to be played in wet weather and sometimes even canceled due to inclement weather.

“In the previous match, they were playing in really wet conditions so I mean from the players’ point of view it’s quite challenging,” said Ng.

“For the players, they have to adapt quickly to different venues, different surfaces, and the weather,” the 31-year-old added.

The dry conditions of the second half, however, seemed to have a cooling effect on the goalscoring boots of both teams as they struggled to make any headway in the final third.

But Serangoon proved to be the more dominant team from the kick off through Kirthik Shandan (SER #7), who was tearing up and down the left flank. But the boys in blue could not find the necessary final ball to put themselves ahead.

The first real chance came to Marsiling instead through Muhammad Danial (MAR #18) who found himself some space in the box and managed to send a looping shot. But the shot was too soft and was saved easily.

The momentum, then, began to shift to Marsiling as they threaten again midway through the second half as Serangoon began making mistakes in the middle of the pitch.

Muhamad Sholihin (MAR #11) had a great opportunity to put Marsiling in front when he managed to beat the defence to get into the box. But when left with a one-on-one against the goalkeeper, he could not convert.

From this result, Marsiling are in a more comfortable position with four points in the table and their coach, Jamaluddin Abbas, felt confident of their chances to go into the next round.

“For us a draw is okay, but a win just now, a single solitary goal would suffice for us to get to the next round, but anyway, the ball is round as they say,” he said, adding that his boys have beaten their next opponents, Sembawang Secondary School, before in the qualifying round.

For Serangoon, however, their next match against Bedok Green Secondary School is crucial to their progress — and even that might not be enough.

“We have one more game, we definitely have to win that game, and it really depends on how the other teams actually perform,” said Ng, 37.

In the next round of matches, Serangoon will play against Bedok Green while Marsiling will face Sembawang on March 22.
