Meridian Junior College, Tuesday, April 1, 2014 — Millennia Institute (MI) saw off Yishun Junior College (YJC) 2–0 in their opening Group C match in the National A Division Football Championship. YJC’s Ryan Teh (#11) conceded an own goal in the 26th min, while Abdul Hasyir (MI #13) scored from a corner kick in the 29th min to cap off MI’s 2–0 victory.

Both sides started with lobbing long balls out wide for their strikers. The play on both sides allowed no chance for short passes in the midfield.

MI broke the deadlock in the 26th min, when Ryan (YJC #11) miscalculated his header to let the ball slip into the back of the wrong net. Just three minutes later, an unmarked Abdul Hasyir (MI #13) slid in a loose ball from another corner.

Outmuscled and beaten in pace against the MI midfield, Khairul Luqman (YJC #13) received a yellow card booking for a reckless tackle on Muhammad Nabil (MI #16) in the 40th minute while contesting for possession.

MI remained impressive throughout the rest of the game, closing down quickly on the YJC players. As hard as they tried, the YJC midfield could not find a hole in the MI defence to exploit. Lone striker Andrik Kok (YJC #19) had to play against two burly MI center backs without support. YJC dominated the possession of the ball in the second half but their bad exchange of passes let them down.

MI will play host to National Junior College (NJC) on Friday, April 4, 4.45pm, while YJC will host NJC on Monday, April 7, 4.45pm.
