vision 2030 live better through sports

East Coast Park, Saturday, November 2, 2013 – The Footvolley Association of Singapore (FvAS) held its first public demonstration during the recent Deepavali weekend. It is the first in a series of five such events, aimed at raising the profile of footvolley in Singapore.

With the 4th Asian Beach Games (ABG) in Phuket coming up in exactly a year’s time, the FvAS, which will be sending a men’s and women’s team, is searching for capable athletes to form a women’s team.

Indeed, the thought of representing the nation in a brand new beach sport resonated with four women, aged between 21 to 26, stepping up to try their hand at this sport.

“Initially, I found it difficult as I could not use my hands like in Beach Volleyball but I think it’s not bad! Not easy for someone without a background in soccer or sepak takraw to pick up, but I’ll try!” said a beaming Vicki Chng, a 2nd year Psychology student at the Nanyang Technological University.

Footvolley, a cross between football and volleyball, was first played in Brazil in the 1960s. Played in pairs or in threes, the objective of the game is to ground the ball on the opponent’s side of the court using any body part except the hands. The first team to reach 18 points will win the set. Winning two consecutive sets wins the game.

Footvolley has had a presence in Singapore since 2006. The FvAS is in the midst of seeking National Sports Association (NSA) status from the Singapore Sports Council so that it can officially vie for the medals on offer at the upcoming ABG in November 2014.

Anyone interested in trying out this game can contact the FvAS President – Adaham Abdullah – via email at adaham@footvolley.sg. The next public demonstration will be held at the end of November in Clementi, followed by a 3-on-3 Footvolley tournament on Dec 1st at the ECP, sponsored by Tampines North CC.
