Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, June 29, 2012 – Having lost their previous match, Tanglin Secondary fought back to earn themselves a 48-26 win against Bukit Batok Secondary in the first round of the West Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship. This, however, left Bukit Batok with their second defeat.
The game started out as a tight contest, with Tanglin leading 18-14 at the half-time break. As the second half commenced, Tanglin pulled away to lead 35-17 in the third quarter, and finally, took the game for a comfortable win.
Both Aloysius Teo (#11) and Choo Wei Xiang (#15) from Tanglin emerged as joint top scorers for their team, scoring 16 points each, mainly from free throws. Clarence Ngay (#8) was the top scorer from Bukit Batok, helping himself to 11 points.
With both teams trying to avoid a second defeat, supporters turned up for both sides. Aloysius Teo scored a buzzer-beater at the end of the third quarter, which got the Tanglin crowd roaring.
Tanglin captain Choo Wei Xiang attributed their win to a change in attitude.
He said, “We lost the previous game so we showed more fighting spirit.”
He was also proud of his teammates, saying, “The Secondary Ones really stepped up. They trained hard and played well.”
The Tanglin team includes nine Secondary Ones.
On the other hand, Bukit Batok saw many areas for improvement.
Player Benjamin Tan said: “We lacked teamwork and didn’t play well. We could have played with more urgency and been more alert.”
Bukit Batok will aim to improve their play when they meet Commonwealth on Tuesday, July 3rd, while Tanglin will try to stop School of Science and Technology’s winning run when they meet on Wednesday, July 4th.
