Tanglin Secondary, Friday, April 5, 2013 — Hong Kah Secondary beat Kranji Secondary 3–1 in the semi-final of the West Zone B Division Football Championship. They will now meet rivals Jurongville Secondary in the final.
Both teams were well-matched as Hong Kah had a team of strong players while Kranji were well-organised and determined.
In the first half, Kranji – coached by former Sembawang Rangers player, Phua Beng Her – chose to defend and wait out their opponents. As a result, it was Hong Kah who went for the kill as Mohammad Azreen Aziezul gave his team a lead with his goal in the 30th minute. Despite evidently having more possession, Kranji were reluctant to rush their shots and both teams went into the half-time break with the solitary goal.
Early in the second half, Kranji were rewarded for their patience when they were awarded a penalty during one of their rare forays into Hong Kah’s penalty box. Kranji scored from the spot kick to make it 1–-1 but unfortunately could not hold the tie for long as Hong Kah fought back twice as hard. Eventually, it was Hong Kah who triumphed as Mohammad Azreen Aziezul and Haiqal Pashia Anugrah ended any hopes of an upset by Kranji as they scored another two.
Hong Kah, who are also the reigning National B Division champions, will now look towards retaining their West Zone B Division title and winning it for the eighth time since the school was founded in 1996.
Coached by Mohammad Zainudeen, the team will be relying heavily on their National Football Academy (NFA) boys – captain Muhammad Muzakir, centre back Muhammad Danish, midfielder Muhammad Shah Zulkarnaen, forward Haiqal Pashia Anugrah and towering goalkeeper Kenji Syed Rusydi.
Hong Kah will cross swords with Jurongville for the third successive year in the West Zone B Division Football Championship at Tanglin Secondary on Monday, April 8, 2013.
