When Hwa Chong Institution's Justyn Phua lined up to take his fourth throw in the A boys' javelin competition, he was trailing junior teammate Wang Tingjia in second. A few minutes later, he not only bettered Tingjia's best throw, but also a national schools and championship record that has stood since 1970.
With this win, Victoria improve to a 8-1 win-loss record since Round 1 with their sole loss against Meridian Secondary. They advance to the semi-finals as second-place finishers from Group X.
Cheang Jia Jun (#83) of Catholic High scored a hat-trick.
It came down to each school’s fourth-fastest B Division runner – ACS(I) had Joshua Loo in 11th, while HCI’s George Lai was 15th.
Oscar Ong (CC #28) had a game high of 14 points while his teammates Eugene Jr (CC #23) and Pan Minghui (CC #22) had 12 and 10 each.
Dillion Yap (#7) had a game-high 19 points for Presbyterian High while Chua Kaixuan (#7) led Catholic High with 15.
When the two teams last met in Round 1, Northbrooks had won 5-2. Northbrooks went the entire season undefeated before enduring their first defeat in the final.
The top three runners all made strong finishes to the race, with gold and bronze only separated by 0.59s.
