Republic Polytechnic, Thursday, August 6 2009 – Ngee Ann Polytechnic beat Singapore Polytechnic 51-31 to ensure that they did not finish last in the girls’ Polytechnic-Institute of Technical Education (POL-ITE) Basketball Championship.

It is was the last game for both teams and both had identical 0-wins-4-losses records.

It was obvious why these two teams were at the bottom of the table as they struggled with passing and possession. Scoring was also a problem, with NP leading by only 6-0 half-way through the first quarter. By the end of the first, SP finally got their first points through their #13 to ensure some respectability on the scoreline as NP walked off leading 11-2.

The second quarter play improved slightly, although it was scrappy, with three players tussling for the ball on the floor at one point. Players were losing possession easily as opponents snatched the ball out of their hands. Balls were also going missing in dribbles.

SP’s #1 and #11 came off the bench and played improved for their team as they closed the gap to 19-21 by the end of the second quarter.

However, SP scoring went dead completely in the third quarter and NP scored 13 unanswered points to lead 34-19. Some lovely shots punctuated an otherwise nondescript fourth quarter as NP wrapped it up 51-31 to win their first game.

The last day of the girls’ championship will see NYP and TP playing for 3rd placing and RP and ITE vying for 1st place.
