Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Monday, March 25, 2019 — Having accepted the loss of her 1500-metres championship two weeks ago, Cedar Girls’ Kylie Tan was placing her hopes on topping the B Division Girls’ 3000m final at the 60th National Schools Track and Field Championships.

The Secondary 4 student bagged home a double gold for both events last year, and refused to settle on failure in defending her 1500m throne.

This time, she decided to set aside her past failure.

Stopping the clock at 11 minutes and 47.93 seconds, Kylie delivered accordingly, finishing in first place to defend her title. Alyssa Yeong of North Vista Secondary and Felis Tan of Crescent Girls’ School finished in second and third with timings of 11:53.65 and 12:02.11 respectively.

On her win, Kylie shared: “I still can’t believe I got first. While (the winning timing) is not my personal best, I didn’t expect myself to get gold.”

Much of her uncertainty about her performance was due to academic commitments and a knee injury.

“I am not at my peak this season. I feel like as compared to last year, I focused a lot more on my studies. After all, it’s my fourth year in school and I need to get promoted,” Kylie explained.

“But I still try my best for trainings despite focusing more on my studies. I try to manage my time better, and when I have time, I would go for longer runs.”

Despite the setbacks she faced throughout the year, Kylie displayed a strong front of resilience as she begins to make plans for her future races next season.

“For my pet event, the 1500m, there were people expecting me to get first again but I was quite far off,” she said. “However, I will train harder next season, and hopefully break into sub-5.”
