National Stadium, Wednesday, April 11, 2018 — Ruben S/O Loganathan of Anderson Junior College made a late surge entering the final lap of the A Division boys’ 3000m steeplechase event at the National Schools Track and Field Championships to claim the gold with a timing of 10 minutes and 21.53 seconds.

Armand Dhilawala Mohan of Raffles Institution came in second, clocking a timing of 10:26.55, while Er Wen Han of Hwa Chong Institution finished third with a timing of 10:45.64.

Er’s team-mate, Ivan Song, led the pack for most of the race, but as the race was entering the last two laps, Armand and Ruben both overtook to jostle for pole position.

Eventually, Ruben was able to pull ahead over the course of the final lap to claim pole position. Song eventually settled for fourth place in 10:45.87.

“When I overtook, I could see Armand chasing me on the big screen. I knew there would be a fight at the last stretch so i held nothing back and gave all out from the last 300m,” commented Ruben S/O Loganathan on the final stretch of the race.

“Overall I was happy but I know our timings could have been better. I’m just super happy to have the support of my coach from Flexifitness, my parents, my teammates and friends as well as my CCA HOD and principal from Anderson JC for giving me such an opportunity,” he added.

In the B Division 2000m steeplechase final, Jerrell Lim of St. Andrew’s Secondary dominated the field to win in 6:28.55. Abu Bakar of Victoria School was first runner-up with a timing of 6:56.97 and Hwa Chong Institution’s Aeron Young completed the podium in 7:04.91.
