Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Friday, April 6, 2018 — To Addeen Idzni, injury always comes at the wrong time. But she made sure to overcome it to reclaim her 800 metre throne in her final A Division girls’ event at the National Schools Track and Field Championship.

The Singapore Sports School student stopped the clock at 2 minutes and 28.07 seconds to clinch the gold, ahead of Dunman High’s Levyn Wong and defending champion Arissa Rashid of Hwa Chong Institution. Wong and Arissa finished in 2:29.73 and 2:30.65 respectively.

The win came in the form of redemption for Addeen, who finished out of the medals in seventh place last year due to injury. This is only her second medal; her last medal in the 800m came in 2016, where she was the victor in 2:31.28. Due to injury, Addeen had to miss the 2015 edition.

“I’m really very happy that my hard work for this season has paid off,” said Addeen. “I’m very happy that it turned out like how I planned.”

Addeen made her move to the front of the pack at about 350 metres in and held on to her lead to the finish.

“I’m very grateful to all my competitors for helping me push, as well as my teachers, coaches and parents for believing in me and supporting me at all my races,” added Addeen.

“Without their encouragement, I really would not have made it through.”

In the B and C Division races, Wu Shu Han of Nanyang Girls’ High and Claudia Tang of Cedar Girls’ Secondary were the victors. Wu clocked a timing of 2:30.38 while Tang finished her race in 2:31.31.
