Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, February 2, 2018 — A consistent scoring game by Jurong Secondary (JSS) helped them to a dominating 49–2 win over River Valley High (RVHS) in the preliminary round of the West Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

From the tip-off that was effortlessly won by Yu Xian (JSS #13) given her huge height advantage, Jurong took no time at all to get into momentum through a shot by Yuqian (JSS #9). River Valley were unable to get their plays going against a solid Jurong defence with their lacklustre ball movement.

In the second quarter, River Valley saw more attempts at the basket thanks to the valiant efforts of Hong Xinning (RVHS #7), who created plays for her teammates off her passing. However, the sturdy Jurong defence cornered River Valley into only scoring via free throws, with Xin Yi (RVHS #5) and Clarice (RVHS #12) contributing one each.

Jurong heightened their defensive game in the second half and turned up the heat against River Valley, pressuring them at half court. Xinning (RVHS #7), as the playmaker, faced numerous double-teaming from Jurong, resulting in turnovers and points off fast breaks for Jurong.

When asked about her team’s performance, captain Xinning (RVHS #7) replied: “I felt that it was a good learning experience where we picked up a few learning points, such as having more aggressiveness and speed.”

On areas of improvement, Xinning remarked: “The team can work on movement around the court, to be less passive and to ask for the ball.”

Jurong captain Valerie (#7), who had a game-high 12 points, had a message for her team.

“Focus on the game. Let’s work harder,” said Valerie, who shared that the team is aiming for the National Championship title.

With this win, Jurong extended their winning streak and will face an undefeated Kranji Secondary on February 8 to determine the winner of their group. River Valley will also be facing Assumption English School on the same day.
