NTU The Wave, Tuesday, September 19, 2017 — Steady scoring by Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) gave them the 58-43 victory over Singapore Management University (SMU) in the Singapore University Games Basketball Championship.

SIT improve to a 1-1 win-loss record after this win. They lost to Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) previously and will face Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) next.

On the other hand, the loss drops SMU to a 0-2 record. They lost to Nanyang Technological University (NTU) previously and will face NUS next.

Both sides started off strong. Peter Soo (SMU #4) led the scoring for SMU, making three three-point shots for SMU. He scored the 13 first-quarter points for SMU which contributed to his game-high 17 points.

Despite that, SIT remained calm and played their game. They scored steadily and continued to play defense. SIT led SMU 16-13 after the first quarter.

After the break, SIT ramped up their defensive efforts and prevented Peter (SMU #4) from scoring easily, while making their shots. SIT were able to capitalize on their shots to steadily increase their lead.

While Peter (SMU #4) did make a game-high 17 points, the balanced scoring from Hiew Zi Hao (SIT #12) and Pang Chongjing (SIT #15) contributing 13 and 10 points respectively lifted SIT over SMU. SIT took the game 58-43.

Captain Zi Hao (SIT #13) commented, “I think we did well on our defense and offensively we did what we were supposed to do. We defended like we were supposed to and we boxed out and this gave us an advantage. SMU did well with their rotation. But we were able to identify their top scorers and we were able to prevent them from scoring easily and eventually get away with the score.”
