OCBC Arena, Friday, May 12, 2017 — Dunman High School (DHS) secured the 40-25 victory over Victoria Junior College (VJC) in the National A Division Basketball Championship.

With this win, DHS have a 5-0 win-loss record since their first round games. They defeated Anderson Junior College (AJC) previously in round two and will be up against defending champions Raffles Institution (RI) next to determine who will advance as first place of group X.

On the other hand, this loss marks the end of the season for VJC. They have a 2-3 win-loss record since their first round games. VJC lost to RI previously and will play against AJC next.

VJC got off to a good start, making the shots that they took. However, DHS were not affected but instead played on calmly. DHS made use of their well executed plays and patience to get ahead and led 12-8 after the first quarter.

However, VJC got into a shooting streak in the second quarter. Ong Sze Yan (VJC #2) knocked down a transition three to start the second while Sim See Min (VJC #7) hit back-to-back threes thereafter to help cut the lead. The shooting streak allowed VJC to outscore DHS 11-8 and cut the DHS lead to one. DHS led 20-19 at the half.

Coming into the third quarter, DHS took their defense up a notch. They were focused, clamping down on the driving lanes and contesting shots. This prevented VJC from scoring easily while DHS capitalized on their offensive opportunities to increase their lead. However, when VJC were able to break the defense of DHS, they were not able to capitalize and missed several open shots.

Without finding a way to score, VJC could not cut the lead that DHS had built. DHS eventually took the game 44-25.

DHS captain, Teh Wen Ruey (DHS #5), commented, “I think our defense today was good and we were able to secure most of the defensive rebounds, which is an improvement from our previous games. We also stayed out of foul trouble for most of the game except the last quarter, which is good but it would be better if we can lessen the number of fouls we commit.”

“The next game against RI is not going to be easy, but for now we are not focused on the results and will just do our best for the next match and continue to work to improve our game.”
